Why Hire a Personal Trainer Instead of Just Joining a Gym?

Anyone can join a gym. That doesn’t mean you know what to do when you get there.

People work out for all kinds of reasons. Some want to lose weight. Some want to get stronger. Some want to move better, feel better, or just get back into a routine.

And a lot of people need accountability because, left to their own devices, they’re going to find a reason not to work out three times this week.

That’s normal.

Knowing you should exercise and actually doing it consistently are two completely different things.

There’s another reason a lot of my clients choose personal training that doesn’t get talked about enough: they don’t want to think when they come work out.

They’ve been thinking all day. Work. Kids. Meetings. Schedules. Whatever else they have going on.

When they walk into Klein Fitness, I already know what we’re doing. They don’t need to come up with a workout, figure out what weight to use, remember what they did last time, or decide whether they should be doing squats or curls or spending 30 minutes on a treadmill.

They can walk in and do the thing I’m telling them to do. That’s part of what you’re paying me for.

A Gym Gives You Equipment. A Personal Trainer Gives You a Plan.

A big gym can give you a lot of stuff to use.

Great. Now what?

You can find thousands of workouts online. You can watch videos. You can download an app. You can walk around the gym and do a little bit of whatever machine happens to be open.

But none of that necessarily tells you what you should be doing.

Personal training is different because I can take what you tell me you want and turn it into an actual training program.

If you want to get stronger, lose some weight, move better, or just get back into a routine, your workout should be built around that goal.

It also needs to be built around your body, what you can do right now, how you’re progressing, and sometimes just what kind of day you’re having.

I’m watching all of that while you train.

How easy was that set? How hard are you pushing? Is your form starting to break down? Are your triceps done? Can we change the movement and get more chest? Is today a day to push the weight, or is today a day where getting through a good workout is the win?

After doing this for 15 years, I don’t have to stop and run through a checklist every time. I see it and adjust. That’s the difference experience makes.

A Good Personal Trainer Knows When You Have More in the Tank

Most people are not great at judging how hard they can safely push themselves.

Some stop too early because something feels hard. That’s not me talking, that’s the research.

Some do the opposite. They load up more weight because they think heavier automatically means better, even when their form is falling apart.

A good trainer should know the difference between “this is hard” and “this is a bad idea.”

Sometimes you have another rep. Sometimes you need more weight. Sometimes you need less weight and better form. Sometimes we need to change the exercise altogether.

And sometimes you’re talking entirely too much and I need to give you something that makes talking less appealing.

That’s coaching.

The point isn’t to destroy you every time you come in. The point is to know when to push, when to adjust, and how to keep moving you toward whatever brought you here in the first place.

Personal Training Should Be Tailored, Not Pulled Off the Rack

I think about personal training a little like buying a shirt. You can buy one off the rack, and technically, it’s a shirt. It may fit you fine. But if you want it to fit really well, you get it tailored.

Training works the same way.

Most of the people who come to Klein Fitness aren’t trying to become professional athletes or get on the cover of a fitness magazine. They want a tune-up. They want to lose a little weight. Get stronger. Feel better. Move better. Look better in their clothes. Have more energy. Learn what they’re doing. Maybe stop getting winded doing something that shouldn’t be that hard.

Those are pretty normal goals. And you don’t need some crazy workout program to accomplish them. You need a program that makes sense for you, and you need to do it consistently enough for it to work.

What Does Personal Training at Klein Fitness Look Like?

Klein Fitness is a private personal training studio in Downtown Memphis. That means you’re not walking into a huge gym, competing with a crowd for equipment, and trying to remember the workout you saved on your phone.

You come in. We know you. We know what you’re working toward. We know what you did last time and we train you accordingly. Some days we’re going to push. Some days we’re going to refine and adjust.

If something doesn’t feel right, we change it. If something is getting too easy, we make it harder. If you’re making progress, the program should progress with you.

That’s what individualized personal training is supposed to be.

You Probably Don’t Need More Fitness Information

There is more fitness information available right now than anybody could possibly use. Workout videos. Apps. Podcasts. Influencers. Diets. Programs. Challenges. Machines. Watches telling you to stand up.

Information usually isn’t the problem. The problem is figuring out what applies to you and then actually doing it consistently. That’s where personal training can make a difference.

You have somebody who knows what you’re trying to accomplish, builds the training around you, pays attention while you’re doing it, adjusts when necessary, and expects you to show up again.

For a lot of people, that’s exactly what they need.

Personal Training FAQs

Is a personal trainer worth it?

If you need accountability, individualized programming, help choosing exercises and weights, or simply want to stop guessing every time you work out, personal training can give you a plan and someone responsible for helping you follow it.

You still have to do the work. You just don’t have to figure out all of it by yourself.

Do I need to get in shape before I start personal training?

No.

That would be like cleaning your house before the housekeeper comes.

We start where you are. That’s the whole point.

What does a personal trainer actually do?

A personal trainer should do more than count reps. Your trainer should understand your goals, build workouts around them, watch your form and effort, select appropriate exercises and weights, track your progress, and adjust your training as your needs change.

What is different about a private personal training studio?

At Klein Fitness, you’re not competing with a general gym crowd for equipment or trying to figure out your workout alone. Your session is planned and coached around you in a private training environment.

Is personal training only for people who want to lose weight?

No. Weight loss is one reason people work with a personal trainer, but it’s far from the only one.

Our clients train to get stronger, improve fitness, move better, maintain muscle as they get older, get back into an exercise routine, and have somebody holding them accountable for actually showing up.

Where is Klein Fitness?
